Overview
Tarangire National Park is a national park in Tanzania’s Manyara Region. The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park. The Tarangire River is the primary source of fresh water for wild animals in the Tarangire Ecosystem during the annual dry season. The Tarangire Ecosystem is defined by the long-distance migration of wildebeest and zebras. During the dry season thousands of animals concentrate in Tarangire National Park from the surrounding wet-season dispersal and calving areas.
It covers an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometers (1,100 square miles.) The landscape is composed of granitic ridges, river valley, and swamps. Vegetation is a mix of Acacia woodland, Combretum woodland, seasonally flooded grassland, and baobab trees.
Activities
Game Drives: This is the most common activity, providing opportunities to see the park’s abundant wildlife, including elephants, lions, giraffes, and zebras.
Game drives can be conducted in the morning, afternoon, or as full-day excursions.
Night game drives are also sometimes available, offering a chance to see nocturnal animals.
Bird Watching: Tarangire is a haven for bird enthusiasts, with over 500 bird species recorded in the park.
The diverse habitats support a wide range of birdlife, making it a rewarding experience for birders.
Nature Walks/Walking Safaris: Guided walking safaris offer a more intimate experience with the park’s environment.
These walks allow visitors to learn about the smaller details of the ecosystem and get closer to nature.
They are conducted with experienced and armed guides for safety.
Cultural Visits: Opportunities exist to visit local Maasai villages and learn about their traditional culture and way of life.
This provides a chance to interact with the local community and gain insight into their customs.
Hot Air Balloon Safaris: This activity provides a stunning birds eye view of Tarangire. This is a very memorable way to view the landscape, and the wildlife.
Sightseeing:
The Tarangire river, and the Baobab trees provide some spectacular scenery.
